This is the third version of VertDesk and, without a doubt, the best version so far. In a nutshell, VertDesk v3 is stronger (275-pound lifting capacity), sturdier (1-1/8″ thick surface), and more durable; there’s no wobbling or squeaking as the desk moves up or down or when in use. Without further ado, here’s a look at what the VertDesk has to offer.
Customizing Your VertDesk
When it comes to options, you get plenty of them when ordering. However, the more extra things you add on, the more the VertDesk is going to cost. So if you want all or most of the cool bonus options, it’s going to cost you. Here are some of the things that you can customize:
Desktop color – There are ten to choose from like Mahogany, Galaxy White, Chocolate Flame, and Cherry. Note: the test unit is Hardrock Maple.Desktop size – There are eight different sizes. You can go as small as 24″ x 36″ or as large as 30″ x 72″. Note: the test unit is 30″ x 60″.Base size and color – You can go with the 22.5″ or 27.5″ deep foot base in silver or black.Grommets – You can choose to have none, one, two, or three. You can also choose their location.
Casters – You can choose whether or not to have them (makes moving the desk around a lot easier).Buttons – You can choose the standard buttons (only up/down arrows) or the programmable buttons. Note: the text unit has programmable buttons as will the giveaway prize.
Other options – A few other things that you can choose to have are a swivel pencil drawer, power strip, wire management piece (wraps around all cables), keyboard tray, monitor arm mount, CPU holder, and file cabinet (hanging or mobile).
With all of these options, you can truly turn a basic electric standing desk into an advanced and organized workstation. Also note that upon ordering, the desktop is made to order and takes around five to seven business days for production.
Putting Together Your VertDesk
The desk is delivered in two parts: the base comes in one box and the surface comes in another. You’ll receive all of the parts (gears, motor, control box, support brackets, legs, feet) needed to put it together, besides a screwdriver or electric drill, of course. The desktop already has pre-drilled holes, and there’s also an instruction manual to guide you along the way. If you’re a visual person, BTOD even has a detailed assembly video, which I’ve included below. It takes minimal time and effort to put the desk together; with the help of my husband, it took around twenty minutes. The only thing that was slightly difficult and frustrating was getting the hex rod (holds the motor in place) securely into the legs; it didn’t slide in as easily as expected. There are two small wire management pieces included that attach to the bottom. (For more you’ll have to add it on when ordering.) These are great for hiding the cables from the control box and motor. A power strip is also recommended. You can even use your own (like I did) and attach it underneath the desk to keep all of your outlets within easy reach. You’ll definitely need some strength to pick the desk up and stand it upright. It’s best to have someone nearby who can help with this.
How It Works
With the VertDesk all put together, all that’s left is to set everything up on your desktop and program the sitting/standing heights (if you have the programmable buttons). You’ll also need to have it plugged in so that it will function; it plugs into a standard 110-volt outlet. Unlike the standard up/down button panel, the programmable button panel (using LogicData technology) has four memory buttons and a digital display that shows you the exact height of the desk. It can go as low as 27″ and as high as 47.5″. The one thing about the memory buttons, though, is that you have to hold them down the entire time to raise or lower the desk. So, if you have 34″ programmed to button #1, you have to hold down button #1 the entire time in order to move it to that height. If you prefer a desk that requires just a single button push and then moves to the desired location, then this may not be for you. However, I must say that it’s pretty easy to get used to this functionality.
Final Thoughts
The latest version of VertDesk is perfect for home and office use. From the quality materials to the modern style and professional design, it’s a definite keeper. Even though I was a little disappointed with having to hold down the memory button while adjusting the height of the desk, I didn’t find it to be a deal-breaker. Using the desk brings a lot of satisfaction since it has a ton of surface space, is easy to operate, and keeps one from sitting down all day long. Just make sure you have the space for it as you’ll need it (especially with the larger surfaces). Also, if you have kids, you’ll want to add some corner guards/protectors since they’re square and pointy. With tons of customization options, some that even help to free up more space, this is a good choice for those who spend a lot of time at their desk. It even comes with a ten-year warranty on the frame and desktop and a five-year warranty on the included electronics. So if anything goes wrong within that time, you’re covered.
